Chico Defeats Cal in Rematch

Cal made the trip up to Chico on Saturday, February 20th to play the Wildcats for the second time this season. With a home field advantage and momentum coming off of a surprising 36-17 upset win over Stanford on Feb. 13th, Chico overcame the Cal Bears for a 29-12 rematch victory. Try scorers for Cal were Abby Vogel (5), Kathryn Clark (5), and Greer Sullivan (2).

Cal continues to try to strengthen the cohesion between the more experienced forwards and the relatively rookie heavy backs. Considering that Cal’s top try scorer is veteran Prop Abby Vogel, it is evident that Cal has been focusing on a forwards’ game to get tries on the board, while the backs have been getting a lot of practice mounting defensive lines.

Coach Mari Triplett continues to focus on the growth and positivity of the team, “Despite the loss, our team made many improvements over our previous game, and executed much of our game plan. Morale and effort never subsided within our squad, which is a testament to the attitude and dedication to improvement that our entire team maintains.”

There certainly have been some surprises in this season’s PMRC West Division with Chico upsetting Stanford and Stanford finding the pace and energy to beat the Aggies, who are leading the division. While Cal has slumped to last place, there is still the possibility for some movement in 3rd/4th place in the final league match as Cal travels to Stanford and Chico will face the Aggies in Davis.

Cal will face Stanford in the last league match of the season next Saturday, February 27th, 2016 at Stanford’s Steuber Rugby Field. Stanford is fresh off of a 12-19 win against the UC Davis Aggies, who have been the frontrunner in the PMRC – West Division this year. Cal previously faced Stanford on Witter Field on Feb. 7th where the Bears lost the match, 10-55.
